IGNOU FAQs
Straight answers to the questions IGNOU students ask most โ assignments, exams, results, re-registration and more.
Assignments
Generally, undergraduate courses need around 35% and postgraduate courses need around 40% in assignments โ but this can vary slightly by programme, so always confirm with your official programme guide. What matters most: you must pass your assignments separately from your term-end exam, so a great exam score can't cover for a failed assignment.
Assignments are usually submitted at your study centre, and for many programmes also online through the assignment submission portal. Submission is generally expected before the term-end exam form window for that session (commonly around March for the June exams and September for the December exams) โ but always check the official date sheet since dates shift each cycle.
Use the "Know Your Status" tool on the IGNOU website with your enrollment number. If your status doesn't update for a while after submission, it's usually just a processing delay โ give it a few weeks before raising a grievance.
Yes, for most programmes IGNOU requires handwritten assignments โ typed submissions are generally not accepted unless your specific programme guide says otherwise. Always attach the assignment submission form with your response sheets.Need help getting yours done properly and on time? Chat with us โ
Exam Forms & TEE
Log in to the examination portal with your enrollment number and select the courses you're appearing for that term. Make sure your assignments for those courses are submitted first โ incomplete assignments can block you from being allowed to appear.
Hall tickets are typically released a couple of weeks before the exam date and can be downloaded from the examination portal using your enrollment number. If it's not available yet, check back closer to the exam date rather than assuming there's an issue.
You need to have completed the minimum required study period for your programme, submitted your assignments for the relevant courses, and be within your programme's maximum permitted duration. If any of these aren't met, the exam form portal usually won't let you select that course.
Similar to assignments, it's generally around 35% for UG and 40% for PG courses โ but this can differ by programme, so check your course guide for the exact figure rather than assuming.Confused about your specific programme's rules? Ask us on WhatsApp โ
Results & Grade Card
Results are usually declared roughly 6-8 weeks after the exam concludes, though the exact timing varies by session. The fastest way to know for sure is to check the official results page directly with your enrollment number rather than relying on a fixed date.
Use the gradecard portal on the IGNOU website with your enrollment number and programme code. Note that different programmes are grouped under different portal categories, so if the page doesn't load your record, double-check you're using the right one for your programme.
This usually means an assignment or practical mark hasn't been updated in the system yet. It's often resolved within a few weeks on its own โ if it persists, raise it through iGRAM (IGNOU's grievance portal) with your enrollment details.
Duplicate marksheets can be requested through the relevant form on the IGNOU website along with the prescribed fee. Processing typically takes a few weeks, so request it well ahead of when you actually need it.
Admission & Re-registration
Use the "Know Your Admission/Registration Status" tool on the IGNOU website with your enrollment number and programme code, or check the confirmation email sent after your payment went through.
Re-registration for the next year or semester opens ahead of each session (January and July) and should be completed online within that window. Missing it can delay your programme progress, so it's worth setting a reminder rather than relying on memory.
Dispatch can take a few weeks after your admission is confirmed. While you wait, you can access the same content digitally through eGyankosh. If it's significantly delayed beyond the usual window, raise it with your regional centre. We track this kind of thing on your dashboard automatically. Sign up free โ
Migration certificates can be requested through the relevant portal/form on the IGNOU website along with the prescribed fee โ typically needed if you're moving to another university after completing your programme.
Projects & Dissertation
Formats vary by programme, but most expect a title, objectives, a brief literature review, and your proposed methodology. Always follow your specific programme's project guidelines document rather than a generic template, since requirements differ between disciplines.
This is usually tied to your term-end exam cycle โ commonly around March/April for the June TEE and September/October for the December TEE โ but always confirm on the official date sheet since it can shift each session.Need guidance from topic to final draft? Talk to us โ
Corrections & Grievances
You can request a correction through the relevant form on the IGNOU website, or by raising it through iGRAM with supporting documents (like your ID proof) attached. Keep a copy of everything you submit for your own records.
Use iGRAM (igram.ignou.ac.in), IGNOU's official grievance portal, to log a complaint and track its resolution online. It's the recommended channel over emailing individual departments, since it's trackable.
